Andy "Monk" Black was born in 1966 in Belfast, Ireland and currently resides in Dublin. Andy has a law degree and besides his final table appearance at the 2005 WSOP Main Event he also had a 14th place finish at the 2005 WSOP. He's known as "The Monk" and has taken time out to live in a monastery. Andy is also a student of Buddhism. Some of the players and dealers form the Merrion Club in Dublin put up the $10,000 entry fee for Andys WSOP Main Event seat.

Black was also nominated for Cardplayer Magazines Sportsmanship Award and is a very well liked and respected player in todays tournament circuit. He typically plays poker online, but with his high finish at the WSOP Main Event in 2005, a higher confidence level has arisen and he will most like be seen in more major events in the near future. Black says that his religious teachings have helped him to better manage his emotions at the table and become a better player. Andys trademark on his appearance is that he wears his sunglasses upside down.
