Most every sport has their own Hall of Fame where the top players in the sports history are honored. Just like other sports, Poker has a Hall of Fame. The difference in the Poker Hall of Fame is that there is no official home for the honorees. Even though there is no official building where these players are honored but nonetheless, each of the players in the Poker Hall of Fame have an extensive history of winning poker games and winning big money.

The Poker Hall of Fame was started in 1979 and has a total of 37 honored players. Most years there has been just one player inducted. The years that two players have been inducted are 1993, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010. In 1979, the first year, there were 7 players inducted.

Because this is such a huge honor in the poker world there are certain criteria that need to be met for players to be considered for admission. Each year players are nominated and voted on and the standards for nomination include:

• High Stakes Play
• Play against top world competitors
• Well respected by poker peers
• Well rounded play - Texas Holdem, Omaha, Stud games
• Years of consistent good poker play
• For non poker players to be considered they must have contributed to the success and growth of the game with lasting results

Out of the 37 Poker Hall of Famers, there are only 16 of them still alive and all but two of the inductees are 20th century players. You may also see that there are some years in which there were no additions to the list.
