2013 Card Player Player of the Year Award Won by Daniel Negreanu
It was only less than ten years ago when the 39-year old Daniel Negreanu became a legend in 2004, the year his live earnings reached $4.4 million, he garnered four titles and participated in 11 final tables. It was also in 2004 when he got the titles Card Player Player of the Year plus World Series of Poker POY.
Last year, this Canadian pro poker player went back on top and dominated the rankings. He won 2 big poker titles and joined seven final tables. This made him earn 5,140 POY points which is 842 points more than the next one in line, Paul Volpe. His live earnings also reached $3,114,058 in 2013. This made him the 4th player to get the title of Card Player Player of the Year twice.
In an interview, Negreanu mentioned that these kinds of races always suit him because of his goal-oriented personality. Winning in these races shows consistency and that has more meaning to him than just winning one tournament.
This incredible lucky streak for Negreanu started during the 1st World Series of Poker Asia- (WSOP APAC). He was the champion at the $10,465 Main Event where he got $1,087,160. He also finished fourth in the $2,323 Mixed Event.
Last Spring, he placed 4th in the European Poker Tour (EPT) Grand Final main event and garnered $416,722. A few weeks after, he placed 7th in another season-ending tournament at the Bellagio – the World Poker Tour Championship $25,000 Main Event.
Furthermore, he was a runner-up both at the WSOP’s $2,500 Limit 2-7 Triple Draw Lowball and the EPT Barcelona high roller where he took home $347,715.
But what really assured his victory in the Card Player Player of the Year Award is his winning in the 2013 World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) €25,000 no-limit high roller. Here, he was able to defeat a total of 80 top players which made him win his second title for 2013. It was his 6th WSOP gold bracelet where he took home €725,000 (equivalent to $1,001,225 USD). Because of this, he overtook Erik Seidel (8th placer in the said event). Negreanu then moved up to 3rd place with total earnings of $19,399,176
