Poker is a great game that combines skill, daring and a large slice of luck. You can’t control what hand you get - but you can control how you spend your bankroll, and that’s one of the secrets of success. Here are a few tips to help you get the most from your game.
Controlling how you spend your money is critical to good poker play. Another factor is playing according to a game plan. Spend some time visiting online poker sites and picking their brains. There’s a lot of good advice around, but far fewer people who are willing to take it before risking their money.

Last night’s event was the $300 buy-in sixhanded no-limit hold’em (with rebuys) tournament. The event had a $450,000 guarantee but crushed that number when the 1,133 entrants rebought 1,652 times and added on 569 times, bringing the total prize pool to $1,006,200. The first-place finisher stood to snag $209,793.
And there were plenty of notable players still in the running when it got down to the top 20. Among those still in the tournament were Annette ‘Annette 15 Obrestad, Isaac ‘mjorgenson13′ Baron (better known as westmenloAA), Jordan ‘pimpin pens’ Smith (better known as scarface_79), Owen ‘ocrowe’ Crowe, Steve ‘thorladen’ Weinstein, and Matt ‘mattyv’ Vengrin. Of those six players, four were knocked out before the final table. Annette_15 finished in 17th ($6,540), ocrowe in 13th ($8,050), thorladen in 10th ($15,093) and pimpin_pens in seventh ($21,130).
Mjorgenson13 and mattyv both made it to the final table of six players, but mjorgenson13 became the second elimination of the table. He took home $53,329 for fifth place. Mattyv made it to heads-up play with johnnypoker69 and mattyv wound up raking in the final pot. He took down the $209,793 first-place prize and the exclusive gold FTOPS jersey avatar.
The final results were:
1) Matt “mattyv” Vengrin - $209,723
2) johnnypoker69 - $139,862
3) readmyline - $99,614
4) BLAKE39 - $74,459
5) Isaac “mjorgenson13” Baron - $53,329
6) qwerty987 - $34,211
Today’s event is a $100,000-guaranteed seven-card stud tournament with a $200 buy-in (with $16 entry fee). The tournament starts at 9 p.m. ET.
THE Treasury Department is charged with a number of law-enforcement jobs - protect ing the president, investigating counterfeit money, tracking terrorist financing and more. But now, thanks to a legislative “rider” passed last year, Congress has told Treasury officials to spend their time and resources going after something far more trivial - people who play cards from their home computers.Frankly, federal law-enforcement officials have bigger fish to fry.
In the final hours before Congress went out of session last October, anti-gambling lobbyists got their “Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act” attached to our port-security bill. The move allowed their measure to ride the coattails of our vital legislation and become law.
The ban on Internet gambling is misdirected - and it’s also probably unenforceable. People will still gamble on the Web, just without the protections that a legal framework could provide to ensure age-verification and protection against fraud. And online gambling now generates $13 billion a year; under the ban, online gamblers won’t send a portion of that cash in tax dollars to the Treasury - instead, it’ll go to scam artists and gray market entrepreneurs.
The Internet poses new challenges and problems. When the music industry ignored the massive and growing consumer desire to access songs online, a piracy industry blossomed. Similarly, our bans on Internet gambling have been effective only in pushing the business off U.S. shores and out of the hands of scrupulous businesses. By contrast, simply taxing Web betting would generate significant revenues that could be used for a variety of domestic priorities.
Of course, some serious issues need to be addressed. Children, gambling addicts and those who would try to use gambling sites for illicit purposes absolutely need to be restricted from these Web sites. But it is far easier to put in common-sense protections when the industry is controlled by law-abiding businesses than when it operates as an illegal market. Thankfully, technology now allows companies to address these issues. In Britain, where Internet gambling is legal and regulated, technology checks ensure that gamblers are of age and are not problem gamblers; watch lists work to prevent money-laundering.
The Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act, which we’ve cosponsored, uses fines and revokes licenses for Web sites that don’t sufficiently police against improper use. That’s the right approach. Rather than simply repeal the ban on Internet gambling, our Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act would create a regulatory framework that ensures operators are licensed and protects consumers against underage gambling, compulsive gambling, money-laundering, identity theft and fraud.
In the end, there is the question of how much we want government to be involved in our private lives: For many, playing poker with friends on the Internet is a way to unwind at the end of the day. Technology aside, Web gambling isn’t so different than the way Americans have relaxed and enjoyed the company of friends for decades.
Years ago, the Treasury’s Secret Service agents used to help Harry Truman put poker games together in the White House. Now they’d be locking him up.

HOT SPRINGS NATIONAL PARK, Arkansas — Thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts from across America are expected to visit the city September 13 through September 15 for the Second Annual Hot Springs Rally.
Last year 8,000 motorcycle enthusiasts from 21 states attended the first-ever Hot Springs Rally.
The organizers considered the first rally such a success that they voted to return to the Spa City this year. The rally is an “open rally” and welcomes motorcycle enthusiasts no matter which brand of bike they ride.
Three major music concerts will be among the highlights of this year’s event. The concerts are open to anyone who pays the $40 registration fee, according to Steve Arrison, executive director of the Hot Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Thursday night, September 13, the concert is billed as 40th Anniversary of the Summer of Love in San Francisco. The band will be Big Brother and the Holding Company, Janis Joplin’s original band, and Jefferson Starship, the lineal descendant of Jefferson Airplane. The concert begins at 8 p.m. at Summit Arena.
On Friday, September 14, the band is country legends Sawyer Brown. The concert begins at 8 p.m. at the Timberwood Amphitheater at Magic Springs & Crystal Falls, which also will be the starting and ending point for the big motorcycle parade through downtown Hot Springs.
On Saturday, September 15, the concert will be Grand Funk Railroad, the legendary rock band that made “last night in Little Rock” a famous phrase. That concert begins at 8 p.m. in Summit Arena.
An early bird party and vendor mall are on tap Thursday at the Convention Center, followed by the concert.
Friday’s activities, in addition to the parade and Magic Springs concert, will include self-guided tours, poker runs and bingo.
Saturday will see a bike show, kids games and closing ceremonies in addition to tours, poker runs and bingo.
